|
|
I just installed gentoo on a box and had to do it offline (the person gets internet in a week or so). As I don't have the space for the installdoc in my head, I used my laptop to store them.
So by Installing from the universal and package CDs the GRP, I discovered the pain of finding the parts you need in the docs. I made an error and had to start again, the owner of the box questioned me if he can handel the distro if I had to start again or if we would be better reinstall his SuSE distro (wich he start to hate for the windows feel)!!! I reasured him the Install is the hardest part, so we went on.
What crossed my mind in this situation was: why not switch the docs to the Part you need after the intro?
As humans tend to make errors, IMHO we have to minimize the chance for errors to take place!
I had a lot of chances to make errors or just look at the wrong place in this GRP install, because I had to search the relevant parts out of the docs
What do you think abaut, makeing the docs more linear, like read intro, click link for GRP install, follow line for line (no jumps!)?
Thanks, Dominik _________________ GNU/Linux user #383872 |

No this is the index of the normal install docs with the jumps in it.
Thanks anyway. _________________ GNU/Linux user #383872 |

In my opinion, this is the only useable version.
Your best option is to submit a bug to docs to see if they think it'd be worth their time. I'd also be a bit more clear on what it is you are seeking, as I thought you were looking for what yellowhippy suggested. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

I think they try to make the docs for as many people as they can without having to create so many splits of them. It's probably a consistency issue more than anything. I'd just suggest being extremely methodical and careful. If you get too confident, that's when you start making mistakes. Slow down. _________________ "Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream."

There is also the Handbook on the CD itself, in the docs directory. It is the Handbook as of the release, so it will be up-to-date and current. _________________ Ex-Gentoo Developer

LOL The Version on the CD is the older one, as errors and and other bugs get fixed in the online Docu. I do not think the CD's are updated with every Docu update.
