A7V8X-X Network Dies

I have an A7V8X-X with built in ethernet. I am using the 2.4.28 vanilla kernel. I use the via-rhine module to run the ethernet.

I notice that the network card stops working when it is under heavy load. I can stop and restart using /etc/init.d/eth0 restart and everything works again.

I can recreate the problem when transfer a lot of data to the machine (using scp) and then run emerge sync on another terminal. The network will stop working when emerge sync gets to the "Updating Portage Cache". So the problem happens under high network load and disk load.

Any ideas?
