Hallo Zusammen,
ich hab schon die Foren Suchfunktion bemüht konnte aber kein passendes Posting zu meinem Problem finden. Und zwar wenn ich in der .xinitrc mein exec gnome-session eintrage oder per gdm gnome normal aufrufen will, startet xorg einen twm und bietet mir an Sachen wie den Desktop und ein Panel frei zu platzieren, das ganze aber wohl etwas verquer. Letztlich hab ich es schon mit export WINDOW_MANAGER="/usr/bin/metacity" versucht, gebracht hat es leider nichts, im gconf-editor hab ich den Pfad auch schon umgesetzt und zwar beim 2ten Punkt unter apps und dann gnome, wenn ich mich richtig erinnere.
Falls jemand eine Idee hat was ich falsch gemacht habe oder mir ein passenden Link zukommen lassen kann würd ich mich freuen. Es handelt sich hierbei übrigens um ein frischgebackenes Gentoo.

Zum einen würde ich mal in der rc.conf schauen, ob du die XSESSION-Variable auf gnome gesetzt hast. Wenn ja und du tippst startx ein, so sollte auf jeden Fall Gnome starten. Wenn dem nicht der Fall ist, so ist der Fehler anderswo zu suchen.
Das | Code: | | export WINDOW_MANAGER="/usr/bin/metacity" |
brauchst du afaik nicht. Im GDM ist die Default-Session meines Wissens immer Gnome. Ansonsten kannst du unter Session im GDM auch mal Gnome direkt auswählen und dich dann einloggen. Ebensowenig benötigst du den exec gnome-session Eintrag in der .xinitrc |

Vielen Dank für die Hinweise. Ich habe aber bereits
1. In der rc.conf als XSESSION Gnome stehen und in dem Displaymanager GDM.
2. In der /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf konnte ich leider nichts sinnvolles finden.
Weitere Ideen. Wenn ich startx tippe oder mich per GDM einlogge startet praktisch TWM mit Gnome, dass heisst ich kann die Sachen alle frei platzieren und sie haben dazu noch so einen hässlichen türkisen Rahmen. Weitere Ideen? Auf Wunsch kann ich auch mal einen Screenshot machen.

gnome-control-center
gnome-display-properties
da kann man diverse sachen noch ausführen.
Außerdem versuch mal, ob das auch z.b. mit Fluxbox passiert.

Fluxbox läuft einwnadfrei, die einzige Alternative zum "kaputten" bzw. "falsch" konfigurierten Gnome. Ich werde das mir jetzt anschauen, auch wenn ich jetzt keinen Zusammenhang zwischen GDM und einem Gnome mit falschen WM sehe. Bis gleich.

Also im gnome-control-center, gibt es 1-2 passende Punkte die ganz interessant klingen, Screen und WIndows. Ersteres kann ich nur die Auflösung ändern, zweiteres lässt sich gar nicht erst öffnen mit der Anmerkung dass mein WM diese 'Extensions' nicht unterstützt.

kanns an der xorg-config-datei liegen.
kopier die irgendwo hin, und erstell mal eine neue.
Zut Not würde ich versuchen, Gnome neu zu kompilieren

Ja, schade. Das gnome-display-properties, ist das Screen aus dem Menü Dialog bzw. dem gnome-control-center Screen und ändert nur die Auflösung. Ich bin mit meinem Latein am Ende. Seufz. Die X Settings, ich weis ja nicht, ich werds mir nochmal anschauen. Vielen Dank für die bisherige Hilfe.

Versuch mal das ganze mit einem anderen Benutzer
und in der gdm.conf sollte es so aussehen (also so funzt es jedenfalls bei mir)

Möglicherweise war Dein WM nicht lauffähig, als Du GNOME das erste Mal gestartet hast, als Fallback wurde twm genommen und dieser Zustand beim beenden gespeichert.
probier 'mal | Code: | | killall -9 twm; killall -9 twm; killall -9 twm; sawfish& |
oder welchen WM Du sonst benutzen willst. Falls sawfish nicht läuft, kannst Du möglicherweise nichts mehr über die Tastatur in dem Terminal eingeben, dann musst Du die Maus benutzen: twm mit linker Maustaste markieren, mittlere Maustaste drücken, & bis Zeilenende markieren, mittlere Maustaste drücken. Jetzt läuft der twm wieder und Du kannst den nächsten WM probieren.

Vielen Vielen Dank für eure Antworten. Ich hab jetzt die xorg.conf Settings überarbeitet und nochmal ein .gnomerc mit export WINDOW_MANAGER=/usr/bin/metacity angelegt und schwupps sah es nicht mehr so ganz grauenhaft aus. Problem ist nach wie vor dass der Nautilus nicht reagiert, weder im Terminal (ala nautilus&) noch selber im Desktop. Ich hab jetzt einen weiteren Benutzer angelegt und schwupps geht es, es liegt also nahe mal die die .gno* Verzeichnisse beim anderen Benutzer zu löschen. Mal sehen worin das resultiert.
