PostPosted: Tue Dec 21, 2004 5:33 pm    Post subject: Prelinking KDE not working Reply with quote

I'm trying to use prelink to speed up KDE's loading time. I ran prelink and it worked fine, then I edited /etc/env.d/99kde-env so that the variable KDE_IS_PRELINKED="true" (I also tried to set this variable equal to 1, which if I remeber my programming is equivilent, but I thought I'd give it a try). Then I rebooted and started kde, but it didn't run faster, it actually seemed to run slower (performance hit could just be my imagination). The Gentoo prelink how-to said that once you inform KDE that it is prelinked, it will no longer load kdeinit, so I checked the running processes and sure enough kdeinit was running, whic leads me to belive that KDE doesn't know it's prelinked. If anyone could offer help I'd appreciate it, cause I'm trying to squeeze every ounce of performance out of my machine. :)

Do you have the 'pic' USE flag set?
Was it set when you compiled KDE?

hmmm, I don't have this set, I see it's necessary for prelinking...

Should I set it and do emerge -e world and then prelink again?

Cheers

well i'm pretty sure ive got prelinking working over here. pic is in my use flags and i set kdeenv up as required. im using my own kde cvs ebuilds (updated today) and this is the first time ive noticed improvement, and ive been trying to prelink for a while. now on a cold boot it goes from command line to desktop in under 6 seconds.

good luck!

Wouldn't emerge --newuse <insert kde packages here> be suficient?

Well, I guess so, but what about the other packages that were compiled without the pic USE flag? Will they prelink?

I guess not. you probably need to reemerge with the new use flags all the packages you want to prelink.
