Once you use your virtual machines with version 5 beta you can't go back to using them with 4.x |

Thank's a lot taskara and Himpierre!
Everything is running like a champ, i've got NPTL enabled and a pure udev system without rc-tarball, and vmware can run in my accout without a problem.
I edited the ebuild to use the latest vmware version at the moment, 11888, before emerge, the ebuild compile flawlessly.
I did permitions to users read a execute /usr/bin/vmware (symlink to /opt/vmware/bin/vmware) like i did in the older versions, and as Himpierre sugested, changed permitions to /opt/vmware/lib/bin-debug/vmware-vmx.
Then i use a little script to create onfly the needed vmware udev nodes, start samba, start vmware service, lauch vmware, wait vmware finish to stop vmware service and samba.
before upgrade i did backup my old virtual machines (windoze) via samba and removed all virtual machines.
after upgrade i recreated my virtual machines ad restored the backups via samba again, everything is working, thank's guys!
thank's for the enlightment forkboy, i had my virtual machines backuped just i case i need to go back, as a windowze hater i don't plan to suffering reinstalling this sh!t again. |

can i run both versions (4.5 and 5.0 beta) side by side?
sorry to ask these things here not in vmware support forums, i just thing that i've found a more knowledgeable people here than there.
every time i say "gentoo" people run out. |
4.5 won't work for 5, they send you the reg keys when you register for the beta. Also, I think reg keys are differant for each beta (well at least I get sent a new one). _________________ Tyan Tiger K8W, 2xOpteron 240,Powerbook5,6 15" 1.5g, Macbook Black 2g, Mac Mini 1g, Ipod P60g.

vmware is being soooo kindly distributing beta versions for free, anybody knows when this key expire?
i suppose month before i need to go back to the old version, can someone confirm this? |

Have installed VMWare 5 beta, thanks muchly for the ebuild.
modprobed the following to get the monitor support and networking:
Code: | # modprobe vmnet
# modprobe vmmon |
ran the following to get the required network devices:
Code: | for a in `seq 0 9`; do mknod /dev/vmnet$a c 119 $a; done |
enabled CDROM legacy support and installed Windows Server 2003 - works fine.
However I am noticing something slightly odd in that when I open VMWare at first, everything is ok. After I start up a virtual machine, all (or nearly all) of the text on any screen I'm looking at becomes distorted and it doesn't go away until I either restart X or reboot (restart fluxbox has no effect). The text in the Windows Server 2003 virtual machine is almost perfect.
Nothing shows in /var/log/Xorg.0.log or /var/log/Xorg.8.log when it happens.
Am running kernel 2.6.10-r4, the latest ATI-Drivers 8.8 for XOrg 6.8 and Fluxbox 0.9.11
Any suggestions, has anyone else experienced similar?
Thanks |

you can avoid restarting X by changing between vcs (CTRL+ALT+F2 and then back to vc corresponding to X ALT+F7, in my conf).
cheers |

Actually, going to vcs and then back to vc makes it 100 times worse, I can barely make out the shape of the windows on my desktop after doing that.
Thanks for the suggestion though |

Found a workaround to my color issue... if I run glxgears after it happens everything reverts back to normal.
kinda weird but I guess I can live with it |

Glad to hear this works. I'm having trouble getting it to run on an Athlon64 running 2.6.9-14 (in 64-bit mode.) I downloaded VMware-workstation-5.0.0-12206.tar.gz and received my serial number. I used the ebuild posted by taskara and modified it for this version number. I had to create package.unmask, since this package is masked. When I ran emerge, it listed out a long list of libraries it couldn't find, but then continued anyway. I ran /opt/vmware/bin/vmware-config.pl and let everything default. If built vmnet successfully:
------
make: Leaving directory `/tmp/vmware-config0/vmnet-only'
The module loads perfectly in the running kernel.
Starting VMware services:
Virtual machine monitor done
Virtual ethernet done
Bridged networking on /dev/vmnet0 done
Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet1 (background) done
Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet8 (background) done
NAT service on /dev/vmnet8 done
The configuration of VMware Workstation 5.0.0 build-12206 for Linux for this
running kernel completed successfully.
-----
However, when I try to run it, I get this:
root@emach /opt/vmware/lib/bin # /opt/vmware/bin/vmware /opt/vmware/lib/bin/vmware: error while loading shared libraries: libX11.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I tried exporting LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/X11R6/bin, but that doesn't seem to help. Any ideas on how to get this to work? My system is built with nptl if that matters. Thanks. _________________ Guy Rouillier |

Wasn't this version supposed to fix the choppy sound in live! cards? Because sound is still terrible, in msdos and windows 2000.
Or is it fault of not having reinstalled the guest OS? Did anyone try a fresh install of a guest OS? |

Sound is still choppy with my Audigy2.
The Direct3d is quite amusing though. Quake3 works very quickly but with corrupt textures. Looks like it'll rival Transgaming before too long and yet anothe reason not to make native games. |

ok call me a n00b. but i cant get this to install from portage. i have added app-emulation/vmware-workstation to /etc/portage/package.keywords but when i run emerge -aDv vmware-workstation it just wants to reinstall the old one. Is there some other little secret i need to know about here?
edit* i just re-read the thread and noticed someone say something about package.unmask and i added it to that and its emerging now. Thanks. |
