http://www.vmware.com/products/desktop/ws5_beta.html

and it has 64bit support :D

edit: opps sorry.. I put this in the wrong place :?

edit2: I've made an ebuild (thanks to jhuebel for the beta1 ebuild) for the new vmware 5 beta, and called it beta2.

download it here

as root extract it to your portage overlay directory, which by default is /usr/local/portage, but I use /usr/portage/local, ie
Code:
tar -zxvf /path/to/vmware5beta2.tar.gz -C /usr/portage/local

also, grab the png file from here and put it AND the vmware file (VMware-workstation-e.x.p-11608.tar.gz) in /usr/portage/distfiles.

then as root add vmware to your package.keywords:

Code:
echo "app-emulation/vmware-workstation ~x86 >> /etc/portage/package.keywords

and give it a try with
Code:
emerge -av vmware-workstation

good luck :)

update: looks like it can only be run as root.. I have tried creating a new group "vmware" and adding my user to it, and chgrp -R vmware dir and NOW I can start vmware as a user, but when I turn on my virtual pc, it gets stuck at a black screen, debug gives this error:
Code:
VMware Workstation must be set-UID root, "/opt/vmware/lib/bin-debug/vmware-vmx" is not.  Are you running /opt/vmware/lib/bin-debug/vmware-vmx from its distribution directory?  That copy of the program is not set-UID root.

setting this back to uid root stops me from being able to start the virtual pc at all!

I am having trouble installing it. It wants to know where the init directories rc0.d thru rc9.d are?

Did you install from the v5 beta1 ebuild in portage?

Just change the ebuild for the new beta2 release.

thanks for posting a problem, now this thread is not in the wrong place :D

rc.d are redhat style init scripts.. did you try the tar.gz or the rpm?

I would do as scoobydu suggests and use the old ebuild..

I haven't had a chance to actually play with it yet.. but I will try to soon! ;)

i used the tar.gz and I am trying the ebuild but I might not be doing it right. Just out of curiosity do you need a beta license for this.

yes, you will.. they should email it to you when you sign up..

but it shouldn't ask you for it until after the program is installed.. but they may have changed that..

if you're using the tar.gz are you following a readme?

I haven't played with it yet so you're kinda on your own ;)

Modified beta1 ebuild installs and works fine here ... had a problem with vmware.png not being there but just tweaked the ebuild ...

btw: Its good!! Just need a 64bit os other than gentoo to install and test the new 64bit functionality.

v5 serial?

You should use the one they sent you when you signed up for the beta testing.

OK gentlemen (and ladies if present)

I've made an ebuild for the new vmware 5 beta.

download it here

as root extract it to your portage overlay directory, which by default is /usr/local/portage, but I use /usr/portage/local, ie
Code:
tar -zxvf /path/to/vmware5beta2.tar.gz -C /usr/portage/local

also, grab the png file from here and put it AND the vmware file (VMware-workstation-e.x.p-11608.tar.gz) in /usr/portage/distfiles.

then as root add vmware to your package.keywords:

Code:
echo "app-emulation/vmware-workstation ~x86 >> /etc/portage/package.keywords

and give it a try with
Code:
emerge -av vmware-workstation

good luck :)

Yes, one of the files need to be made suid root.

Can't fully remember the name (/opt/vmware/lib/bin-debug) I think!? ... I ran vmware in a term, and it gave me the error.

Appears that in debug mode this binary is used :roll: ?

yes, thanks guys.. naturally I tried chmoding everything except Hadrian's wall..

I can chmod the vmware binary, but then get other debug errors that I can't access etc.. I can't change them because they then won't run if it's not rot suid.. so looks like it's a limitation of the beta package - but that seems totally rediculous to me - who would log in as root to run anything!? let alone a beta program

fyi I need to chmod everything so that I can run it, and if I do this is the error:

Code:
VMware Workstation Error:
VMware Workstation must be set-UID root, "/opt/vmware/lib/bin-debug/vmware-vmx" is not.  Are you running /opt/vmware/lib/bin-debug/vmware-vmx from its distribution directory?  That copy of the program is not set-UID root.

at least my ebuild works ;)

lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 22 Dec 24 10:40 /usr/bin/vmware -> /opt/vmware/bin/vmware

chris@josiah ~ $ ls -l /opt/vmware/bin/vmware
-r-s--x--x  1 root root 4715 Dec 24 10:40 /opt/vmware/bin/vmware

Code:
chris@josiah ~ $ sudo chmod 4755 /opt/vmware/bin/vmware

chris@josiah ~ $ ls -l /opt/vmware/bin/vmware
-rwsr-xr-x  1 root root 4715 Dec 24 10:40 /opt/vmware/bin/

Code:
chris@josiah ~ $ vmware
&& start a VM

Code:
VMware Workstation Error:

Hola.

I have no such problems. I just changed the beta ebuild in portage.
NP="VMware-workstation-e.x.p-10737"
to
NP="VMware-workstation-e.x.p-11608".
Emerged this, added the suid bit and everything runs fine.

cheers

that's what i did and it works perfect here

Quote:
SiRiUS tom # ls -al /opt/vmware/bin/vmware
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root users 4715 21. Dez 22:52 /opt/vmware/bin/vmware
SiRiUS tom # ls -al /opt/vmware/lib/bin-debug/vmware-vmx
-r-sr-sr-x 1 root root 3992672 21. Dez 22:52 /opt/vmware/lib/bin-debug/vmware-vmx

i think that was a

Code:
chown root:users /opt/vmware/bin/vmware && chmod 755 /opt/vmware/bin/vmware
chmod +s /opt/vmware/lib/bin-debug/vmware-vmx

i'm a such moron, i spend some time to realize that i need to add vmware-workstation in package.unmask to portage show the latest version as a package that i can emerge.
just a question, before meld my computer emerging this thingy, how long this version takes to expire?
It seems that the 4.5 registration key isn't the same used in this version, just in case i did another registration to get a version 5 registration key, but can i use my old registration key?
can i run both versions (4.5 and 5.0 beta) side by side?
sorry to ask these things here not in vmware support forums, i just thing that i've found a more knowledgeable people here than there.
every time i say "gentoo" people run out.
