dear wizards: could someone please explain to me where I can find exactly what the gentoo livecd uses as its framebuffer device and startup (lilo) settings? I like its 48(?) line mode quite a bit, but do not seem to be able to reproduce it independently, which means trial and error. pointers would be highly appreciated. sincerely, /iaw _________________ /iaw |

iaw,
Install the framebuffer console in the kernel and add vga=ask to the kernel command line in grub.conf.
It wall as at tah start of teh boot what vga mosde you would like to use and show you a menu of those it supports on your hardware.
when you find the right consle for you, change vga=ask to vga=<code>
Its quite likely you already have the framebuffer console in use, so the vga=ask is a good place to start. _________________ Regards,

done this, but I do not see what gentoo is using. I presume it is the vesafb (could be vga, too, but I doubt it). I primarily wonder about what the mode is. I would love to see more of how the gentoo livecd boot up works---there is a later step in the bootup where it wants to set "User Fonts" which seems to undo my earlier font settings, too.
It would be even better if I could also set this framebuffer mode with a command line after bootup...
am I the only one to really like the livecd video mode? IMHO, all linux distributions should be default switch into it .
