|

Video editing seems like such a pain. All I want to do is to cut a piece out of one mpeg. What tool can I use? I tried cinelerra but it won't install. It compiles but fails on the install. I installed avidemux but there is no audio. I was able to cut the video but I lost my audio. I once successfully used ChopperXP (or something like that) to cut a vob. So I used ffmpeg to convert my mpeg to a vob but ChopperXP would not let me forward to the place where I wanted to mark. I just want a tool, preferably Linux, that will let me cut the audio and video of a segment in an mpeg. Is there a solution that works?

You could try Kino. It seems capable enough.

Video editing just hates me!
I tried to install Kino but it died during the compile. I saw that there is a newer version so I set ~x86 but then it couldn't connect to the download site.
I found it elsewhere and downloaded it manually. I finally got it compiled and installed. It will not open my mpg version or my vob version. So I converted it to avi and it won't open that either.
Why is this so hard?
What am I doing wrong?
My video is in a particular format to begin with and I can only create vobs or mpegs. I used ffmpeg to convert it to avi but Kino still says it can't open it.
All three files play fine in xine.
Any other ideas or know what I am doing wrong?
Thx

I found something in the kino forums that I am going to try... _________________ The strong must protect the Sweet. |

There is also LVE and LIVES. I don't know how good they are. And there is also pitivi, but I don't know how it works. I have a working cinelerra-cvs. You might try that. I know cinelerra imports .mov, but I'm not sure about .avi.
Hope you get it somehow. |

Thanks. I tried the cvs version too but it dies on the install. Others are having problems as well.
I saw a post on the kino forums that showed a command line to convert from mpeg to dv format. I did that and kino opened it. I did have to upgrade ffmpeg to ~x86 to get it to work though. Unfortunately there is an audio crackle in the dv file. It isn't there in mpeg version or the vob version or the avi so it has something to do with converting to dv and the command line swiches I used. While I am waiting for authorization to post on the list, I'll asked here just in case.
I converted the mpeg to dv using this command line:
Code: | ffmpeg -i infile.mpg -s ntsc -ac 2 -ar 48000 outfile.dv |
As I said, I am new to video editing and conversion. Do you know what is wrong with the above command line? It is from the kino forum. What would cause the audio to crackle?

sometimes 48000 is not appropriate. Usualy it's better to use 44100
But I'm not sure that's the solution. |

I didn't try with 44100 yet. I tied avidemux again to see if it would load another file and I noticed that it asked me about which audio track to use. I didn't notice this the first time (I don't know how I missed it). So I deleted the .idx file and reloaded the movie I was trying to edit. I chose scan for audio and now avidemux works with sound. I it to extract the scene I wanted and it worked well.
Thanks for all the help! _________________ The strong must protect the Sweet. |
