hello gentoo community

my first gentoo installation went quite flawlessly, but there is one thing im struggling on:

im using a toshiba tecra a2 and i just cant get the wireless card working. the ipw2200 and all its friends load without problems.

libcrc32c 2752 1 crc32c
arc4 1984 0
firmware_class 8064 1 ipw2200

but when i check with dmesg i see this:
Quote:

ipw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
ipw2200: Radio Frequency Kill Switch is On:
Kill switch must be turned off for wireless networking to work.

iwconfig gives me this:

i read at a few places that i need to turn its power on. there is the program fnfx for toshiba to use the function buttons. but 1. it doesnt support the wireless button and 2. when i check with cat /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ipw2200/0000\:01\:05.0/rf_kill it gives me back a 2 which means that its hardware controlled.

any help/advice would be greatly appreciated! thx in advance

EDIT:
maybe this is helpfull, but i couldnt find a solution with it:
http://ipw2100.sourceforge.net/README.ipw2100

EDIT2:
Quote:

root@gentoobook ipw2200-0.19 # iwconfig eth1 power on
Error for wireless request "Set Power Management" (8B2C) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Operation not permitted.

dmesg:

On the left hand side just below the PCCard slot there is a switch that allows you to switch the wireless on and off in hardware. Chech this is on - you will see an orange led if it's on.

Regards,
Stephen
