Screen: "Must be connected to a terminal."

Whenever I try to use screen as a non-root user, I get the message "Must be connected to a terminal" or something like that. As root, screen works just fine. Leads me to think something's wrong with my permissions in /dev somewhere, but I can't think of what to do about it. Any advice?
