Hi you,
all i've tried to get some sound on my system ( "Dell" notebook, "Inspiron 8000" ) is without succees.
So i'm sitting here and don't know further.
My kernel named: '2.6.9-gentoo' and 'alsa' said: "disable 'oss' and try to re-emerge 'alsa-driver' again". My soundcard is 'ESS-Maestro3'. So i dissable all 'oss' activities into the kernel (and i had to recompile it). Now after copy the 'new' kernel to '/boo/' i could read another message after trying to install 'alsa-driver', : means that alsa is built in the kernel - if i had make the right configuration there? - and at last i should (although)
try to install 'alsa-driver' again.
I had red the things i could get and so there are the right changes in '/etc/make.conf' (i hope), also 'alsa-lib' and 'alsa-utils' are installed. But 'alsa-driver' not!
For a little help from your side i would be glad!
Cheers Thomas

it sounds a little bit like you originally had OSS sound support built into the kernel w/ alsa, but you can't do that, you have to pick one or the other. (You can have oss emulation w/ alsa though, but that's still a part of alsa). Also, you don't need to emerge alsa-driver because the drivers for alsa are inside the kernel. Emerge alsa-utils/tools/oss/etc though.

ps. the reason alsa-driver is in portage is because in the 2.4 series of kernels, alsa was not a part of the kernel.

no worries, you're just fine. audio is always one of the trickiest parts in linux, you aren't alone ;) What ended up fixing the problem? (just curious)
