I followed the instructions in the gentoo-wiki. I tried creating a X config with fglrconfig (or whatever its called) but that caused things to crash the same.
I have an ATI Radeon Mobility 9200 in my laptop. Hopefully someone can post a config that worked with similar hardware... |
Can you post the error messages from your /var/log/X.org.log? I mentioned earlier that things might go wrong if you use the fglrxconfig because it mistakenly calls the keyboard driver "Keyboard" _________________ That rank under my username doesn't mean I know everything, it just means I ask a lot of questions. |

I'm currently having troubles with starting Xorg with these drivers.
I'm using Xorg 6.7.0, it seems to moan about some composite extension?

Anyone got any ideas as to why its doing this? I cannot see any "composite" parameter in my xorg.conf! _________________ djh-solutions :: freelance web design | solution provider

I think I may have just figured it out. I'm getting hundreds of errors similar to this:
rmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 5, (OK)
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 5, (OK)
drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID PCI:1:0:0
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 5, (OK)
drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns 5
drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card1
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device)
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device)
I think I need to recompile DRM, or somehow do something with it. Do I have to turn it on in the kernel? What do I have to do?
If I recompile it, and want to use the new drivers, what do I put as VIDEO_CARDS="" in make.conf? |

Everything's up and working here. I used the fglrxconfig util, then fixed the keyboard bit, then once I was in X I copied the changed portions of my old one over (stuff about my fontpaths, my mx500 mouse and such).
glxgears scores are ~100 fps lower than before, but the system feels a little more responsive overall in 2D at least (I *think*... might be placebo).
In any case, it's nice not to have xorg-6.8 masked and to be able to follow updates on it now. |

now THAT'S weird!

Status of what I've tried so far:
Code: |
* Used the posted ebuild (from rage forums) to compile/install the driver
* changed "Keyboard" to "kbd" in config file
* ran "opengl-update ati"
* Detects the card correctly:
(--) Chipset RADEON 9800 XT (R360 4E4A) found
* Attempted to get working with InternalAGPGart "yes" - No luck here,
the desktop will come up, but machine will hard lock after a few seconds
or when trying to drag a window. Made that the chipset specific AGP
module (intel-agp.ko in my case) was NOT loaded via lsmod; also moved
the module to a different location so it would not autoload.
* Recompiled kernel with chipset specific AGP module compiled in - No luck
here either. Desktop comes up and fglrxinfo reports DRI enabled and
opengl implentation to be ATI's. Running glxgears hard locks the machine
again. Nothing in the Xorg.0.log files.
|
I have an ASUS P5B533-E and P4 2.4/533 with Radeon 9800XT.
I have officially given up on ever getting this card to work in linux. |

This driver sucks. XComposite does not work, but does with nvidia. Hibernating using fglrx doesn't work, too.
So, I'll stick with the xorg-driver. FU ATI. |

SO from all the posts I gather that this driver is no improvement whatsoever to the already in use drivers.
When is the next update?
And who is supposed to feel safe buying an ATI card for use with linux?
Im just gonna cop the nvidia card for my new system and it looks my built in Radeon is screwed |

I have a Mobility Radeon 9200; what options do I have? Has anyone gotten decent performance with this card and other built-in cards in Linux?
Even with the new drivers, I aded the necessary options to the kernel, switched the opengl interface to ati, edited my xorg.conf and i still only get 7 FPS on GLForrestFire (screensaver). |

Nothing have changed, my system gets frozen randomly, enemy-territory runs nice, it seems having more fps than old driver, but anyway, it gets frozen just in 2d or 3d work. |

Well I was waiting with bated breath (amongst other emotions).
Got the driver. used the ebuild from rage3d forums.
It works fine.
HOWEVER, I use a big desktop mode and apparently the 3200x1200 desktop is too big for DRI. So after some messing about I can only play Q3 using 1024x768 res on each screen.
Oh well.
Otherwise it works OK. Although I suppose because of this i am no better off than using Xorg 6.8 radeon driver!
Anyway fingers crossed for Composite in the next release!!!
Cheers

On the rage3d forums an ATI employee said the next release will be in february as of schedule, regardless of the fact that today's drivers have been released one month late. The guy said they want to make a new version every 2 months. _________________ It isn't enough to win - everyone else must lose, and you also have to rub it in their face (maybe chop off an arm too for good measure).

Well, keep waiting. Xorg 6.8 extensions aren't a priority for ATi right now. They are mainly concerned with stability and have already said that until there is a commercial need for the extensions, they won't support them. _________________ That rank under my username doesn't mean I know everything, it just means I ask a lot of questions. |

Matt technically didn't say "We will release the driver in December" or anything like that, he just said "It could be expected during that time." Now, while I am not defending him on that point, he never did technically set a hard release date as they did with this (albeit they did it like a week in advance, and later than what they alluded too, but still...) _________________ That rank under my username doesn't mean I know everything, it just means I ask a lot of questions. |

Whatever he said technically, that's what I understood: drivers in february, sorry if I got it wrong. He seemed to make very clear that he consider keeping a 2 months release cycle important for some reason. _________________ It isn't enough to win - everyone else must lose, and you also have to rub it in their face (maybe chop off an arm too for good measure).

No, no, no. I meant for this release. Yes, he openly said the next release will be in February. So that if they don't release it then, we can openly be mad at them _________________ That rank under my username doesn't mean I know everything, it just means I ask a lot of questions. |

Basically, ATI is saying: "We are either slow or we don't care much about our Linux users... your choice. Go get an NVidia card, they have the Linux graphics market."
I just might... |

heheheh ok got it. Well for now I'll be hppy if I can figure out how on earth under ut2004 image quality doesn't affect framerates. like, there's some overhead that works in a strange way. I'll run some tests tomorrow. It's half past two, good night fellow ati users. _________________ It isn't enough to win - everyone else must lose, and you also have to rub it in their face (maybe chop off an arm too for good measure).

Basically, the linux drivers' devs are saying: "we're getting our act together, we'll release drivers every two months like we're doing for windows and things should improve". I don't know if they can keep this promise, nor do you. _________________ It isn't enough to win - everyone else must lose, and you also have to rub it in their face (maybe chop off an arm too for good measure).
