I recently (today :) emerged KDE 3.3,
everything went fine, i removed my old kde config to be sure to get all the new stuff
Configged everythin
restarted the LiSa deamon
etc etc

Tried to go to my brothers smb share
entered the location
smb:// well you know the drill

then an error comes up that it doesnt know the smb protocol
which is weird to me since it worked in 3.2
At frist i thought it was the new samba package which removes a critical symlink (mplayer (dont ask why :) and mc failed to start until the symlink was back in place)
So i put the symlink back, no dice
i thought maybe the konqueror module for the samba shares wasnt compiled due to the fact that it couldnt find the lib for the samba client
so i spent another 3 hours recompiling kdebase (with the samba USE flag ofc)
And yet still no dice
Im all out of ideas, hope you guys arent :D

same here, what i did, is update samba to samba-3.0.6-r1,
and re-emerge all installed packages which depend on samba.
to find these out, do the following
Code:

qpkg -q samba

in my case these were cups, gnome-vfs, kdebase, and kdenetwork
so, i am currently re-emerging them
Code:

emerge --oneshot cups gnome-vfs kdebase kdenetwork

will let you know whether the above solved the problem
happy gentooing
CONFIRM:
the above procedure solved the problem
hth
and happy compiling

i can assure you that it will take a lot less than 5 hours this time around, provided
that you had ccache installed and enabled when you first compiled these packages.
anyways, do let us know whether this solves your problem,
and happy compiling

Code:

# genlop -t kdebase
 * kde-base/kdebase
     Sun Aug 22 16:57:10 2004 >>> kde-base/kdebase-3.3.0
merge time: 1 hour, 44 minutes and 54 seconds.
# genlop -t kdenetwork
 * kde-base/kdenetwork
     Sun Aug 22 17:45:42 2004 >>> kde-base/kdenetwork-3.3.0
merge time: 48 minutes and 32 seconds.

Ok a little less that 5 hours, but i wasnt compiling alone this time, my brother put his comp on too
yay for distcc :D

anyway, recompiling worked, so everything is OK now. thanks irf2003

Ok, merging kdebase and kdenetwork had worked perfect only after merging Samba first...

I am sure that many peoeple are having the similiar problem but the solution to this problem doesn't seem to be known well...
