Hey all
I run a server that will host several Drupal sites. Is there any GOOD reason to use webapp-config instead of just doing manual install and just coping it to different directories for different sites?
i will have 2 drupal powered sites with name based virtual hosts:
www.example.com
www.example2.com
So, i don't see any reason to do the install via webapp-config (not really worried about extra files taking up space).
Any arguments against doing it the manual way? _________________ Gentoo Unanswered Questions- Give it a try! |

Well, with webapp you only have to install it once - if it works for one then it'll work for all of them.
As for using it with just 2 sites... hell, that's entirely up to you.
This is Gentoo, yesno ? _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

Ok, to clarify....using webapp-config involves emering the web application istself (phpMyadmin, Drupal, phpBB, etc.).
Any reason to use that VS download the latest version from the site, install manually?
I don't know about you, but i wouldn't trust emerge to update a production site anyway (since usually they are highly customized), so why use emerge and webapp for important sites? Wouldn't it make more sense to do it manually and apply patches/updates manually after making sure it won't brake the site? _________________ Gentoo Unanswered Questions- Give it a try! |

No, you see, that's where webapp can actually make it easier for you.
Maintain a testing vhost where you only upgrade the webapps, and you can test all you like without even touching your production sites.
Yes, emerging a webapp installs it - to /var/db/webapp.
You still have to clone it to its final destination, which may not be as flexible as installing it manually, but then - if you had special installation requirements webapps wouldn't work for you anyway.
As I said - it's your call.
How often do you intend to upgrade a production site, anyway ?
More than once a year is foolish to begin with. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

I would love not to upgrade the site for a long time, howerver, with most GPL php apps, new versions and revisions come out pretty often. Some of them contain security fixes. So i would imagine that i would need to upgrade the site often from version to version IF it includes seriouse security bug. _________________ Gentoo Unanswered Questions- Give it a try! |
