I have a sidewinder game pad that I've gotten to work but I have to load the modules by hand every time I want to use it. Can anyone tell me how to have the required modules load whenever a game that requires it is started? I see no need to have it load whenever the system loads, I will probably only on occasion use it. i would load the module on bootup by putting it in /etc/modules.autoload and running modules-update afterwards.

another possibility would be to find out if you can use an alias to load the modules on request. but this depends if you want to use devfs or not.

I'm not too fond of the idea of loading it at boot time.

I am already using devfs and I like it but admitedly it's kind of new to me and I don't know much about it. What is necesary to make a module load on request with devfs. Can it be done with the soundblaster live gameport module and sidewinder gamepad module? Is there any gentoo specific HOWTOs on the issue?

Thanks

I don't feel like searching right now but yes there is a HOWTO that shows you how to automatically load any module you wan't and unload them if unused (throught a cron job).
