I was installing FedoraCore3 for my brother-InLaw and I notice they no longer use /mnt/cdrom
they have a new DIR called "media" and they list the floppies and cdroms under it
could one of you explaime why they changed this and will Gentoo also be making thus change? |

Arch uses the mountpoints on / (eg. /cdrom, /dvd ), it's just a matter of taste really. Afaik /mnt isn't part of the standard file hierarchy of *nix/linux _________________ --> Linux ### 2.6.11-ck2 #1 Sat Mar 12 20:21:30 WET 2005 i686 GNU/Linux <-- |

Short answer: it's part of the new filesystem standard.
Long answer: http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html#MEDIAMOUNTPOINT
Since Gentoo doesn't set up your fstab automatically, it's up to the user whether or not to use the new /media mountpoints. I do, because that's what gnome-volume-manager expects. |
