|
|
Been running with reiser on my fileserver for a couple of years now and never really gave it a thaught. Box runs 24/7 doing it thing with no problems what so ever. Among other things it holds all my digi cam pictures.
Came to some of my files today and noticed they had gone belly up, about 30 in total spread over a handful of dirs. Its small errors mostly, handful of bytes changed.
They were all fine a few months back when I last looked.
Now, lucky for me I make regular backups so spot fixing isnt a problem, but damn, the last thing I want is a fileserver that fails to keep files intact! |

And your question is ?
Since this is a server that has been running continuously for years, chances are the hard disk is starting to fault sectors, and it will only get worse.
This is an IDE disk (or else you failed to mention some rather pertinent information) and they were simply not designed to be running 24/7.
That said, I too run all of my servers on IDE disks, and they have been churning away happily for years as well, but the fact remains.
Offload all your data and replace the disk.
Better safe than bashing your head aginst the wall. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

The only time I've had any trouble with ReiserFS was when a sector full of tails had a problem. The result was similar: several small files (in my case, mostly config files) were corrupted, but only a small part of each file was actually damaged. I switched to mounting all of my reiser partitions with -o notail, and have not had any further problems.
That said, I would agree that a disc that has been in use for years is probably due for a replacement. |

I believe you, oh great one!
Your mastery of the English form impresses me to the point where I want to do exactly what you so eloquently suggest.
This does not include sending you money, though.
I mean, you're 13, and you want money - for what ? _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

Just a few suggestions to avoid most (not all) flames in the future...
1.) spellcheck (it earns you a lot more respect than not spelling something at least close to correct...esspecially for words already in the posts beforehand. Incorrect spelling makes you look like you didn't even read it.
2.) if you state an opinion...back it up with why. Nobody likes someone trying to force an idea on someone. However if you bring some real information that's useful to them, they might be more willing to listen.
Just some thoughts
edit: yes...either flames or things like "well I'll not take your advice there...I mean I prefer to restrict access to my bed to specific people...not some stranger called reuser" _________________ while(true) {self.input(sugar);}
