From what I heard, reiser4 is indeed broken in its 64bits release, so I wouldn't advise to use it... Use standard reiserfs, or any other thing BUT this one. About the installation of gentoo on your ASUS A8N-SLI, just follow the guide found on the Handbooks section.

You shouldn't use the nVidia SATA connectors, only the Silicon Image ones, if you use SATA.

After booting from the minimal LiveCD, just do a
Code:
modprobe sata_sil
(or sil_sata I don't remember the order) in order to activate your sata disks plugged in the Sil Sata connectors. They will then appear to be sda, sdb, etc... in your /dev/ directory.
Moreover, you need to do
Code:
modprobe forcedeth
to activate one of the Ethernet port wich is the nVidia port.
Here's my .config to help you design the kernel. I didn't activate the nVidia SATA controllers, just the Silicon Image ones. And I only use the Marvell Yukon Ethernet port. DOn't know about the other one (strange because I used the OTHER one during the install... but still, one port should be enough.)

*edit* I guess you can add the forcedeth thing into the kernel, and ohci is compiled as a module, I don't remember why I did that, but well. have to try that. And just to dissipate some rumors, the hard disks plugged in the Sil3114 controller are bootable, you just have to set your bios the right way. Feel free to ask.

Cool stuff. This will be useful for when I setup Gentoo on my new system!

i mounted a reiser4 partition from my last system and everything was fine. maybe luck? also, anybody knows why the forcedeth is in the 10/100MBit Part of the Kernel? must in 1000MBit.

Because it's the driver for all nForces, the original one had 10/100.

Reiser4 just isn't recommended by Linus which is why it's not in the kernel yet. You can use it, but it's not marked as being *safe*. Try it at your own risk ;)

I'm still waiting on my A8N-SLI board! GRRRR! It's gonna be Easter now! DOH!

Again, my A8N-SLI runs nice ;) ;)
ok, after one day of testing, reiser4 seems to be not unstable for me, but i'm going to use it as /var/tmp/portage/ partition to test the fs. linus does not work on the 2.6er set or? anyway, i use morph-sources, with the latest r4-patchset if somebody is interesting in reiser4 on amd64.

My board should be arriving this week or next from scan.co.uk :)

So the nVidia SATA isn't support? Does the Silicon Image SATA support NCQ? Because I got 2 Maxtor DiamondMAX 10 for RAID 0 configuration and the drive supports NCQ so I want to be able to use it.

Also is SLI supported by nVidia driver? hoping to have 2x Nvidia 6800 Ultra cards :D

I'm fairly sure SLI is supported by the driver yes. I could be wrong, but I've heard of it working. I'm not too sure about the NCQ and the SI SATA chipset. You can test it for us ;)

I still don't have my board :-( And if I don't get it today then I am not gonna have my new system ready for when I go back to uni so it's then gonna be Easter before I get it. Shame... Stoopid suppliers!

Looks like it does!

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_amd64_1.0-0283.html

That's an older driver, but it says:
Quote:
Added support for SoundStorm (Hardware Mixing supported)

So unless they have removed support from the drivers for some reason, I guess it does have hardware mixing ;)

No worries, I was looking around for it myself. Really can't wait to get my hands on this board. Okay so maybe I'm a bit too excited, but it's gotta be a nice board!

sorry, but my x11 system doesnt work, so i cant copy your my .config.
so u see, xorg-x11 do problems (maybe kde). kdm starts nice, but without any text. then, if i switch to console, the console is fucked up like a broken framebuffer console(but i dont use fb on this system), because the vesafb-tng is not ready).
render_accel is off in xorg.conf

You can't send me your kernel config file because your X is broken? emerge nc && use it's FTP features ;-)

Theres a thread regarding the video problems here. To get it to work, try emerging the latest drivers (6629) and setting the options "NoRenderExtension" and"SWCursor" in the driver section for nVidia cards. That should fix ahorn's problems. The console will still be unreadable.

32-bit (previous p3 install, w/2.6.10-gentoo-r4 (might be a different -rX)) had no problems w/X . 64-bit. (2.6.9-gentoo-r14) had the 6600 X problems. SWcursor & disabling render fixed it.

I did change NvAGP to 0 and completely remove agpgart from the 32-bit kernel that I rebuilt for the previous install. (and not build it into the 64-bit one. )

Marvell gig eth: sk98lin, works (only tested @ 100)
Nvidia gig eth: forcedeth Unsure of gig operation ^ is my only other gig ethernet.

Sound: ALSA's snd_intel8x0 works. NO HARDWARE MIXING. (If you get it working, send me a message please!) Does not work in OSS.
(Due to the lack of HW & OSS support, I'm using a SB512 (emu10k1))

Firewire: module loads, untested.
USB2: Seems to be working fine, all I've used so far are hid devices & a wacom tablet.

SEMI-ISSUES:
lm_sensors works with the modules i2c-isa and it87 However, it gives interesting output... (see below) (I've already switched the CPU & M/B, I think -5 & -12V are swapped as well.) the 3.3v seems just ...Off. Unless it's 2x the actual. (I just noticed the limits on Vcore, which should be lower given that the default 90nm voltage is 1.4V)

ISSUES:
The graphics thing. See start. & other threads (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=275551)

My Creative IR controller doesn't seem to work, but it wasn't working under 2.6 with the p3 either... so I suspect that's lirc/kernel issue.

I also had an issue with a Promise IDE controller. I think it had gone bad, but I can't be sure of that. Could be a amd64 issue, I'll have a friend with a computer having an identical card check it out.

Other than that, everything seems to work.

HW:
Asus A8N sli deluxe
Leadtck 6600GT
Athlon 64+ 1.8GHz 512KB 90nm
Western Digital IDE drives 160 & 120GB (7200, 8GB)
1GB (2x512) Mushkin PC3200 (I did have to manually set the voltage, as it was crashing before said event, but that was whole computer crash, not X problems.)

Nvidia-glx & nvidia-kernel 1.0.6629-r1 in both 32 & 64-bit
