I feel that this question will have some obvious answer laying in some config somewhere but I cant seem to manage to get it to work.
When I user VNC (TightVNC viewer on my windows box) to remote my gentoo box a few odd things happen:
When I type "vncserver" and connect im sat at an X screen, after typing "startkde" kde loads however the window decorations are all the "X style" green bar, they have no close button, minimise button etc. Does anyone know what Im doing wrong here?
Also is there anyway for kde to start automatically when im using "vncserver" I already have "exec startkde" in ~/.xinitrc for that user.
Edit: When typing "startx" while at at the gentoo box all goes fine, kde loads, window decorations and all . . . just not when im doing it across vnc.
Thanks for any help and happy new year when it comes . |

Pulseammo,
When you start a vncserver on a Linux box, it spawns another X session without any display attached. To see it locally from the linux box, you must use vncviewer and connect to 127.0.0.1:1
This detached X session uses twm for its windows manager, not KDE.
You can make it use other window managers if you want (I forget how) but the more complex the window manager the slower the image will update because more data is passed over the network. That may not be an issue on a LAN. My advice, is learn to love twm. Its a nice lightweight window manager. It works well over ADSL links. _________________ Regards,

Aaah yes, twm - I knew it had a proper name . Ok I think ill try and stick with it then although im only going to use it over my LAN.
In the cases that there is a program that doesnt have a "close" button what should I do about it? Is using twm's kill option from the rightclick menu alright?
Thanks for the fast reply! . |
