I just installed a new kernel, 2.6.10, an upgrade from 2.6.8. After rebooting in the kernel, finally getting it to work, entrance wouldn't load up on the boot (apparently X wouldn't load at all). I decided to emerge the nvidia-kernel and I did so, and then rebooted. After I rebooted, I now get the message (while in root) whenever I try to use emerge for any purpose
Code: | OSError: [Errno13] Permission denied: '/var/cache/edb' |
I can't seem to figure out why I would have such permissions in root, nor can I think of what could be wrong with my drivers. The more pressing matter is the emerging one, though if anyone would like to enlighten me on the nvidia driver problem, please do (I have tried downloading and installing the drivers from their website, which didn't work). I should mention that emerging won't work in my old 2.6.8 kernel eithor, nor will X. _________________ "Amidst the numerous processors and network cards I have sacrificed for their sake, why is that the computer gods still continue to hate me?" |

Ok I solved the graphics problem, some kind of bad update from the nvidia website, so I got my 2.6.8 kernel working with X, but no 3d. I think I can solve the 3d problem if I can fix the emerge problem, and the emerge problem looks to me like a filesystem corruption. If this is the case, I have come to the assumption that I need to run the command reiserfsck --rebuild-tree /dev/sda5. And my question is this: if I do this, what are the risks my data on that partition will be lost? _________________ "Amidst the numerous processors and network cards I have sacrificed for their sake, why is that the computer gods still continue to hate me?" |

ASpott,
The nvidia-kernel module is not provided as part of the kernel, so every kernel update you need to re-emerge it. If its version changes (not the -rX on the end) you need to do nvidia-glx too. Thats normal behavior.
There has been a lot of messages on the forums about trashed reiserfs4 partitions over the last few days, so I hope you don't use that. _________________ Regards,

This maybe related to your file system problem. About a week ago after upgrading some packages I started having similar error messages about /var/cache/edb which is located on a sata drive named /dev/sda5. I attempted to back-up the /var partition only to suffer a total lock-up. My solution was to boot from a rescue cd, in this case SimplyMepis and run reiserfsck --check /dev/hda5 (note the partition assignment is different). Also found other partitions had errors. I used reiserfsck --rebuild-tree /dev/hda5 and this repaired the partition without loosing any files. There is a risk of data loss so try to back up first. Ultimately, you will want to fix all of your partitions. Good luck _________________ Linux is composed of 1's and 0's but sco appears to be full of #2 |
