Hello. I'm considering buying an old laptop and use it as a dumb X-term.
Can the laptop have a very minimalistic install with pure xfree or are there other things I've missed?
What do I have to run on the server? xfree+gdm, font server? sound server?
I would also like to share the hdd from the server on my LAN, having both windows and linux computers, should I go for samba or nfs?
I'm considering wlan to the laptop; is 11Mbps enough to get a "snappy" feeling?
How do I get a xdmcp-session direct from booting?
TIA |

Many questions.....
Condiser using the laptop as a "thin client': install a basic installation and X on it, and use it to log into your main desktop/server.
Run on the server whatever you like. Because you actually log into the machine, sharing discs/printers whatever is not necessary.
A remote X@ 800*600*16bit color takes about 140 kB/sec on the network.
This link will help you get started
Good luck, and please come back with more specific questions |
