Ok guys,
I've seen the (somewhat) recent talk about the switch to udev as the standard for *nix now, and seen that devfs is now obsolete. It's gotten me curious as to when devfs really will be obsolete, and when I should plan my switch to udev from my current devfs setup.
Is this a troublesome switch? I finally got my ivtv and mythtv to play nice with me, and I'm about done troubleshooting for days straight for a while, but I am already looking for something new to fiddle with, but not break my system.
When will udev become mainstream? What makes udev so good vs. devfs? I'm a huge noob when it comes to the true basics of *nix, and I'm not quite sure what the 'userspace environment' is, and why it makes udev so great.
Thanks for the help, and hopefully it will explain things to others in my situation. _________________ Tyan Tiger MPX 2466

Also http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/udev-guide.xml will help you set it up and if you just emerge udev and not touch any of the config files your system will switch to udev but keep a backup of the current /dev and unpack it at boot to avoid breaking things until udev plays nicely with them. |
