|
|
First of all, I'd like to wish all of you a happy, rich and wonderful comming year 2005 !
I need some help for booting up HP Visualize workstation B2000 with bootable LiveCD : install-hppa-uiversal-2004.3-r1 of Gentoo Linux
After I've got into "Boot Administration mode" and seen following kernel boot up parameters by default,,,
0 : 0/vmlinux
1 : initrd
2 : root=/dev/ram0
3 : init=/linuxrc
4 : cdroot
5 : looptype=zisofs
6 : loop=/zisofs
7 : console=tty0
8 : sti=10/1/0/0
9 : sti_font=VGA8x16
And changed just ,,,
0 : 0/vmlinux
to
0 : 0/vmlinux64
And added,,,
10 : cdcache
As the Gentoo HPPA install manual says,,,
I've got an errore message saying,,,
>> The root block device is unspecified or not detected. Please specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell....
And I noticed in the following messages preceeded that error message,,,
>> Loading modules...
:: Scanning for usb-ohci... Module not found.
:: Scanning for hid... Module not found.
:: Scanning for usb-storage... Cat : /lib/modules/2.6.8-1-pa11-livecd64/modules.dep : No such file or directory
>> Mounting filesystems
Started device management daemon v1.3.25 for /newroot/dev
>> Attempting to mount CD : -/newroot/dev/cdroms/*
>> Attempting to mount CD : -/newroot/dev/ide/cd/*
>> Attempting to mount CD : -/newroot/dev/sr0
Could not find CD to boot, something else needed !
mount : Mounting /newroot/dev on /dev failed : No such file or directory
....
It seems that kernel can't see the IDE CD-ROM...
Using shell, I checked the directory /newroot bot inside is empty.
I've tried some boot up parameters like,,,
"hda=cdrom"
or
"initrd=0/initrd" ( <= with or without .gz )
or
"init=0/linuxrc"
and
"root=/dev/ram"
but the resultat are the same... ending up with same error message.
I've read that IDE CD-ROM and USB keyboard, mouse of B2000 is not supported by palinux...
Is that the same case here, with Gentoo LiveCD ??
Should I buy an external SCSI CD-ROM drive to install Gentoo ??
I've read the thread,
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=53837&highlight=b2000
of ekrunch,,, ( thank you, by the way ) and know that some folks have succeded to install Gentoo on HP B2000...
I'll be very thank full and appriciate, if someone give me some tip to go through...
Thank you very much, fox , in advance for your advice, and I'm wishing you again a wonderful new year.

I've just been back home and saw your post. Thank you, Axp !
I've been trying to install, Linux ( unfortunetely, not "Gentoo" but "Debian" distribution ), I have some keyboard mapping probleme remaining to be solved but I can say that 80 % of the base system is installed on this exotic beast : Visualize B2000 ; )
I'll post shortely the procedue to install "Debian Linux" on B2000 here,,, probablely as prereminally step to install "Gentoo Linux". After my dinner
Please correct me if I make mistake, but during my documentation on B2000 and many parts of HP Visualize with PA-RISC CPU, I've learned that due to thier " fx graphic card ", it won't be possible to make B2000 work with "X" environement.
But anyway, I'll try to find a cutting through to install a linux base system, at least, on this machine. It's worth trying ,,, don't you think so ??
So, as I said, I'll be back shortely... Enjoy your "Visualize", Fox !! [/i] |

I got keyboard mapping problem too when installing Gentoo on my C240.
Finally, I figured out that it was because I selected US/41, which is said to
be "default". Actually, everything is just ok if you do NOT select anything
when you're prompted for selecting the keyboard mapping.
Hope this helps!
Also, from your post I know the FX cards don't work with X.
This really saves me a lot time searching the web for solution.
I give it up.

Thank you for your lines, GentooYY ! And am sorry to be in late
I'm sure that you've already read this page, but in some other cases,,, I put here, the link to the F.A.Q pate of PA-RISC Linux site. It's clear and interesting Concerning on possiblilites for 64bit processing, fx graphic card and X environement.
http://www.parisc-linux.org/faq/index.html#fxgfx
For the promise I've made in my last post that I'll discribe the procedure to install "Debian" distribution on Visualize B2000 W/S, I'm sorry to be in big late... hopping that no one (?) is waiting for me
Hopping you're enjoying your "PA-RISC", Fox ! see you soon !! |

|
|
I've been baaaack ! Hellooow, Fox !!
I've been back with good news,,, I found that if you use Gentoo LiveCD ;
"install-hppa-universal-2004.2" ( <== it's not a latest version of LiveCD )
instead of the latest one ;
"install-hppa-universal-2004.3-r1" ( <== this most recent one seems like not including some inportant pa-linux kernel module for our B2000 hardwears... )
You can bootup B2000, with IDE CD-ROM drive recognition.
And there is two more point to get ready for the installation of Gentoo using " install-hppa-universal-2004.2 " on B2000,,, are...
i). Please choose " 0/vmlinux32 " at *Boot Administration Mode* or boot with default,,, but not with " 0/vmlinux64 " for the beginning... otherwise you can't bootup.
ii). Onec you have your Gentoo prompt, you need to load manually the module for Tulip Ethernet controller typing ;
# modprobe tulip
Then configuer *eth0* manually with typing ;
# dhcpcd eth0
After you can confirme using " #ifconfig " command, if you feel like to
p/s for ii). I recommend you to use "install-hppa-universal-2004.2" but not " install-hppa-minimal-2004.2", because *minimal" LiveCD doesn't contain *tulip* module that hasn't been compiled even "in" kernel itself.
Probabley, a little bit out of thread,,, but I've noticed also that there's boot up problem with the machin ;
HP 9000/D-Class ( I'm using D270 )
when I choose the latest LiveCD ;
" install-hppa-minimal-2004.3-r1 "
This time, the kernel on this LiveCD is not compiled with SCSI driver module ;
*ncr53c8xx*
And, again, when I choose the older LiveCD in version ;
" install-hppa-minimal-2004.2"
LiveCD ( so,,, its kernel ) can recognigze my 2 SCSI hard removable drives immediately in boot time. It's just remark,,, I know that it's hard to make one kernel for every exsisting PA-RISC machins
Hoping that I could make myself understood with my poor English and it will help you in some way,,,,
Wishing all of you, nice "PA-RISC" Linux time with Gentoo I change the status of this thread as " Solved "
See you soon,,, and enjoy !! Fox !!! Takuo with my best regards !! |

|

Thank you very much for your post, Axel ! And I'm very sorry that I couldn't reply promptly.
The iso-image "install-hppa-universal-2004.2" can be found in the *historical* directory of any of Gentoo mirror sites,
For example...
http://gentoo.mirror.solnet.ch/releases/historical/hppa/2004.2/livecd/
Hopping the situation won't change before you check this post
** I have to confess that I couldn't finish installing Gentoo on my B2000,, I couldn't compile kernel.. with this image.. : ( "
** I've given up... I could come as far as before the kernel compiling with this ISO image but no farther than that point...
** Due to an error message...
** I may propose you an alternative,,, Debian... there is also an ISO image for first boot... I need to re-find the link to that Debian ISO image... If you are interested in... My links are in such a mess
Hopping this post could help you... Axel. |

|
|
I was able to install gentoo in a B2000. I used install-hppa-universal-2004.2 CD to recognize the IDE CD and then installed all the system from scratch. Some hints:
1) Disable kernel support for floppies.
2) Disable kernel support for /dev filesystem
Reasons:
1) My first kernel compilation failed with floppy.o. I disabled floppy support in the kernel and after that it compiled OK.
2) It did not find my root partition. I recompiled the kernel without devfs support and then it booted OK.
Regards,
Mauro |

No problem
If you need something during the installation (i.e kernel config, etc) just let me know. |
