Ok this is my 500th post about this subject :P .

I have a matrox p650 (stay tuned please) and I don't know which drivers to use for the
video playback to work properly.

xorg is currently using the "vesa" ones and in mplayer I can't set any other vo (video output)
than "x11shm".

I tried using the mga drivers to no avail...if they work with the matrox p650, I'd be grateful
for a guide of this driver installation.

The mtx drivers, the normal drivers for the p650, need a kernel downgrade in order to work,
but I want to avoid that at all costs.

Any other driver but vesa doesn't seem to work...I'm begging you, don't make me buy another
vga controller. :?

Regards in anticipation of the most helpful answer ever,
alu

Because ?
Replacing the kernel is pretty trivial.

I'd have to downgrade to a 2.4 kernel and wouldn't even be sure to have them working
(well the chances are pretty high though).

Won't a kernel downgrade of that much make my system less reliable and secure?

I don't know about the difference of kernels but I'm thinking that this might be the case. :?

Quite the contrary.
The 2.4 kernel series has been stable for years now, and unless you really need something only the 2.6 series supports, you'd actually get a more stable system.
A 2.6 kernel may be faster and offer better overall performance, though, because of improved VM management and the new scheduler.

I see, that helps me quite a lot actually...I think I'll try using the older one then, can I keep the
new and the old one on, and switch them to my liking when in need?

By the way, in order for my usb dvd burner to work I think I had to upgrade to the most
recent kernel (2.6.10-gentoo-r6). I'm wondering whether that usb thing will still be able to
work correctly? :/

First, you get the latest one:
Code:
emerge gentoo-sources

then you change the symlink:
Code:
rm -f /usr/src/linux
ln -sf /usr/src/linux-<kernel-version> /usr/src/linux

And then just build and install the kernel like you did the first time.

Remember to edit your bootloader config!
