2.) first read

 # man portage
 # man emerge

then

Yeah I suggest you read the handbook.

Also, check out the X config guide:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml

And the KDE guide:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kde-config.xml

Good luck, and post back if you have problems following the guides.

echo "exec /usr/kde/3.3/bin/startkde" > .xinitrc


You're starting the xserver with:
Code:
startx

command.

After you do this you may want to configure kdm (graphical login manager).
