|

Hey there folks, i'm steering this post mainly to the devcrew @ Jen Two (Gentoo).
Ok the Situation is quite clear. Got a VIA VT82C586B chipset, with a K6-450 Mhz, 128 Mb ram, GeForce2 MX 400 32 Mb, 13 Gb HDD Fujitsu MPE3136AT - ATA33.
The problem is that gentoo 1.2 and 1.4_rc1 stall upon checking ide-bus for my hdd, looks like it looses synch, and just sits there doing nothing showing:
Partition check:
/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/
_ [-Blinking cursor]
After this i can wait 10 minutes or even more. (Once i left it for over a few hours, went for a beer and came back to see the same thing.) _________________ Robert A. Kesik

Are you sure it's the chipset? Try unplugging the hard drive and seeing if it boots. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

You see, the thing is that Redhat, Debian, slackware and PLD (Polish linux distro) Have a hard time synching with the HDD, keeps getting IRQ/DMA timeouts.... but it does synch after 3/4 tries.
So, IMHO - it looks as if gentoo can't handle resynching... _________________ Robert A. Kesik

Gentoo doesn't touch your hardware; the kernel does that. If the RedHat kernel works, 'emerge redhat-sources' and use it instead. Also, you could try disabling DMA, if that's caused problems for you. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

Uh, well basically i meant that... the kernel gentoo got well, just don't work right. And how am i supposed to 'emerge' if i can't boot or even install.... it hangs on partition check. _________________ Robert A. Kesik

You can install inside a chroot from inside any working distro. See http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/altinstall.xml. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

FWIW, it's not that chipset by itself. I've got the same on my box and never had any IDE related problems problems with it on Gentoo or any other distro I've run on this machine (Debian, SuSE, Mandrake, ...). Maybe it's some combination of hardware you've got going. |

Funny, you see, my friend got a similar configurration, and he got the same problems instead of this fujitsu drive, he got a old maxtor, and got the same problem as I do. Maybe DFI(This mainboard producer) - put out a fualty line or so...
anyways, i'll give the chroot a shot during christmas. Cheers everyone, have a safe and happy holiday.. _________________ Robert A. Kesik
