I've been using LVM under Mandrake and since converting my system to Gentoo about two months ago. I've tried 2.6 a few times, but I think it's always been the same problem as I'm having this time (trying a 2.6.10-r1 kernel): It boots fine up until the point where it tries to check filesystems (finds /boot okay...); then vgscan fails to run (I didn't write down the exact error message, but it seems to be not finding a library or something...), followed by fsck failures on all my LVM filesystems.

Yes, I have the "RAID/LVM" option checked. Unlike the 2.4 kernel config, there isn't a specific entry underneath that to enable LVM.

What's going wrong??

if your vgscan segfaults at boot you need to emerge a newer (possibly masked) lvm2 ebuild. this fixed it for me.

Yes, about two weeks ago I held my breath, crossed my fingers, emerged lvm2 and committed to 2.6 . Fortunately, just about everything continued to work, and by taking notes of what failed during each boot, I was eventually able to iron out all the issues that resulted from the migration.

Thanks.

What was the solution to having lvm2 start at boot? I just installed it for the first time and everything appears to be working properly, but it doesn't start automatically. (I have kernel 2.6.9-rc6 and lvm is compiled into the kernel- no modules). Thanks.

I'm afraid I can't recall for sure, but it may have been either udev or the device mapper.
