Cant login as root in console....help!!!!

I installed gentoo before and I be able to login as root in console..but after reinstalling it wont let me login as a root in console.. I folllowed the handbook where you type: passwd then echo "tts/0" >> /etc/securetty in order to login as root in console. But, when i reboot then login as a root it says that login is incorrect!! I did passwd in livecd a couple of time but still no go. what did I do wrong? I did add a /home directorty during reinstallation...i dont know if that makes a diference. PLS HELP!!!

You need to have vc/1 in /etc/securetty.
