well, there went my weekend.
i thought i post this to save someone elses weekend....
my hardware specs:
Athlon-XP 2500
Gigabyte Motherboard GA-7N400 Pro2 Flash version F2
20GB IDE drive as (hd0)
1GB RAM
everything else: stripped out and on my desk.
the symptoms:
either i got a: GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB ...... on startup
or i got a: GRUB Hard Disk error
GRUB for some reason could not access the disk propperly.
after researching the topic for over a day and trying all possible bios settings, i finaly tried reflashing the motherboard.
it was pretty painless, i upgraded to the latest flash version F11 (download from giga-byte.com) and voila! it booted no problems.
now if i could only get the gigabit onboard network interface (r8169) to work on gentoo. it worked fine in RH9.
any ideas, anyone?
thanks, and happy emerging!

I have the same mobo and wish I never got it.
I had to flash it before it would recognise any cd drives (not easy when you don't have a floppy, no os and no other computer to access the internet with!).
Anyway, the onboard ethernet works fine here, simply enable the 'Realtek 8169 gigabit ethernet support (R8169)' (under networking devices) in the kernel config (it's under 'Ethernet (1000 Mbit)', not the 100Mbit section).
