Hello,

I Have a fairly old computer lying around and 4 ide disks of 40 gb each.
I want to make some sort of a homebrewed "NAS" solution for home use (no production  )

What are the possiblities/techniques to combine the size of all disks into one. In other words how can i create +- 160GB of continious diskspace out of four 40gb disks?
fault tolerance is "not" really an issue.

thanks in advance

I think your looking for LVM (Logical Volume Management).

I would highly recommend LVM, but what you technically want is a Linear RAID array.

LVM just makes the partitions looks continuous (e.g. you can have a giant 160 gb partition if you want), where RAID will make the disks look continuous.

Just keep in mind that if one drive fails, you will loose all the data on all four drives.

Is this really what you want to do? Correct me if im wrong, but if you make a set of single harddrives to one big one you are really in trouble if one harddrive crashes. All data of the set wont be readable, not only the one which is broken.
