I am a little confused with what I have read in these forums with all this radeon rubbish....

Also I have followed the Gentoo Radeon How to but am still a little confused.....

I have emerged the ati-drivers, but cannot get DRI to work what ever I try, I have tried a few things that are in other posts but with still no avail...

To sum things up:
Current drivers + Xorg 6.7: OK
Current drivers + Xorg 6.8: will not work
New drivers + Xorg 6.8: OK

Unfortunately the release date for these new drivers has now been moved back to mid January - they should have been out in December.

I don't know all too much either, but from what I have learned, and just to be sure, is that you do not need ati-drivers if you have the 2.6 kernel. You can add support for DRI and DRM in menuconfig.

When I first installed Gentoo, I used 2.6 kernel, along with the ati-drivers because I didn't know what the hell I was doing. It didn't work out so well :D

I just successfully installed Gentoo onto my laptop which has a Radeon IGP card in it and it's working great.

Unfortunately that's not quite true. Newer ATI cards (R9500,R9600,R9700,R9800 and the X-series) are not supported fully by the in-kernel radeon driver, so you won't get 3D acceleration. The only option for these cards is the binary ATI driver.

nvidia has better performance than ATI under Linux, often by quite some margin. It's up to ATI to improve the performance of their drivers.

so installing that rpm off the ATi website will give me 3d performance?

lol well i think I will just go without 3D support until I can build it myself, the whole point of me using gentoo is to totally optimise, and installing some bullsh*t i386 rpm is gonna screw it up.

Ahwell will have to play it on my laptop then....

Yes, but you'll need to downgrade to Xorg 6.7 first.

There is absolutely no difference between emerging ati-drivers and installing the RPM manually - everything that isn't precompiled gets compiled either way. Don't be so focused on optimisation.

It shouldn't affect KDE at all. Run this command to install the latest version of Xorg 6.7:
Code:
emerge \<xorg-x11-6.8.0

That tells portage to install the first version lower than 6.8.0, whatever it is. You can unmerge the current version first if you want to, but I don't think it should matter.

Well, yes, theoretically, but it's often not as simple as just installing the driver and starting X. If you have problems check the FAQ and if that doesn't help post back here.
