Sure it's possible (as far as you have a normal airport card, not express or extreme), I just installed Gentoo on my ibook.

You just have to configure your airport card.

modprobe airport
iwconfig eth2 essid "blabla" (of course you have to put in the correct device and your essid)
iwconfig eth2 enc (put in your wep key here, if you have a passphrase use s:"passphrase")
net-setup eth2 (to configure your ip etc.)

that should work.

One problem I had was that the firmware on my Airport card wasn't recent. OS X told me I had 9.52 but the airport modul said something like 4.30.
So always I tried to set the WEP key I got an error.
Only way to fix it was to reinstall my OS X (lukily I have a second HFS+ partition). There it told me I had a 4.30 Firmware. So I did OS X update an voila there was a 8.70 Firmware on my card. I suspect Apple had a bug in and earlier Airport update which didn't really update the firmware and created a non existent version 9.52.

I hope this helps you.

thanks duckula

damn... I got an Airport express card...

I think I will do with Gentoo on Mac Os X or Fink (which seems to me
a lil' bit stable than Gentoo on Mac Os X, by now)

Are you sure??? Airport Express is an access point not a card...

Maybe you are referring to Airport Extreme???

[italian]Ne sei sicuro??? Airport Express e' un access point non una scheda...
Forse ti riferisci alla Airport Extreme???[/italian]
