I followed the gentoo installation manual until chapter 5(or maybe 6) where it says I must use the command :
emerge gentoo-sources
or
emerge gentoo-vanilla
to install the source code. Well, I am trying to install gentoo with 2 CD livecd sets and I can't connect to internet while installing. Is there a way to copy the source code? So after that I'd be able to configure kernel manually or by genkernel command. |

You have to copy the portage snapshot from the cd and also the files into distfiles to /usr/portage/distfiles, otherwise you won't be able to emerge a kernel. To emerge packages from the second cd you need to do this:
PKGDIR="/mnt/<your-cd-drive>" emerge --usepkg <packagename> |

In my case, the name of the package will be : "gentoo-sources". right?
and exactly where should I change PKGDIR variable? |

You probably want gentoo-dev-sources, gentoo-sources is a 2.4 kernel. |

Are you following the instructions for a network-less install?
If so, you shoudl have unpacked your portage tarball, then copied all of /mnt/cdrom/distfiles to /usr/portage/distfiles. At that point, you can "emerge gentoo-sources" and it will already have the files it needs (so long as you didn't "emerge sync" along the way. _________________ Ex-Gentoo Developer

Yes, I've done that and that's what really bothers me. Do I have a problem with my livecds? Should I install the source code from somewhere else?
In addition when I try to untar stage3 tarballs I get the following error message:
tar:Error Exit delayed from previous errors.
Does this have anything to do with that? |

You should point this var to the mount point of your cd drive, surely it must be /mnt/cdrom or something similar. The name of the kernel pack depends on wether you want a 2.4 or 2.6 one, as someone posted above. |
