Why are you booting the SMP kernel? Which version of the livecd do you have? Have you tried booting the "gentoo" kernel or "gentoo-nofb"?

I think the key question here is which version of the live cd do you have? Since you're trying to install on an Athlon did you get the 686 or Athlon-XP live cd? (Are you sure your cpu is an Athlon-XP if you got the XP cd?)

Don't really care about 2004.2 or 3 or whatever. What I care about is the binary version of the files on the cd, which is why I asked if you had the Athlon XP or 686 version?

An Athlon isn't automatically an Athlon XP, which is why you may have downloaded an Athlon XP iso and it doesn't work. A 686 cd image would be a safer bet, and a 386 iso the safest of all. If you're going to do a stage 1 install you might just as well get the 386 iso as you're going to compile everything on your installation anyway. If you're doing a stage 2 or stage 3 it's a bit more important to get the right version, but most important to get a version that's compatible with your actual CPU.

I have exactly the same message on my screen (Dell Latitude X300 laptop) only difference is that it is the first reboot after the install. So i didn't have problems with my 2004.1 disk (2004.3 doesn't recognize my usb cdrom).

not sure yet what the problem is...

Code:

Booting 'Gentoo Linux'

root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /bzImage root=/dev/hda5
    [Linux-bzImage, setup=0x1200, size=0x1f4766]

Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.

WHY are you using a PENTIUM 4 stage 2 with an Athlon processor? That's why it won't work.

Edit: oops, I thought you were the original author of the post, my bad. Though what processor DOES the X300 use? I thought it was the Pentium M, which I'm not sure if those use the same instruction set as the P4.

h4ywir3 you have a kernel configuration issue. Make sure you compiled for the right processor type in your kernel configuration. Your make.conf doesn't apply to compiling the kernel so don't think that just because you got it right there (do you even know if you got it right there?) you have it right in the kernel configuration. If you're having problems you should recombile with generic x86 support enabled, then disable it an experiment with the other architecture settings once you have something that works. Also make sure you have the prober binary support enabled. I thought all this was covered in the kernel howtos somewhere?

outrun is similarly trying to execute a kernel with the wrong binary format for his machine, but it's the cd kerenl rather than his/her compiled kernel.

Right i fixed my kernel! I took out smp (i dunno why i left it in), bleutooth, and wireless lan support, as well as 10to100mbit network support.

I think the smp was the breaker but still i will try to configure bluetooth and wifi later in.

The Dell X300 has a pentium-m processor which i don't have in my make.conf, because it is supported from gcc 3.4 and i run 3.3.something i guess :)

thanx for the help and suggestions
