Hi.

I'm trying to mount a windows share in gentoo.
After reading the gentoo CUPS and Samba guide I did:

Code:

>modprobe smbfs
>sudo mkdir /mnt/share

an then this happens:

Code:

>sudo mount -t smbfs -o username=***,password=*** //machine/share /mnt/share

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on //machine,
           or too many file systems

What should I do? Create a fstab entry for /mnt/share??

Thanks for your help.

a strange error, indeed.

what version of samba are you using? is there something in your logs? dmesg?

Rei

I don't really have samba installed because in the Samba guide it said you don't need it to mount remote shares as a client, you only need smbfs support.
Is this correct?

dmesg output:

I think the problem is here:

smbfs: mount_data version 1919251317 is not supported

Your host you want to connect to seems to run a newer version of smb (WinXP?)
What's your kernel-version (uname -a)?

Thanks for your help. :)

I'm trying to connect to a Windows XP SP2 machine.
I'm running the 2.6.9-r9 kernel from the gentoo-dev-sources.

uname -a:
Code:

Try using xfsamba. Works pretty good on a win2k environment (workgroup) and can read/write to the remote machine.

I am now able to mount remote shares. :D

After all I needed

Code:
>emerge samba

because mount -t smbfs calls for smbmount!

Thanks to everyone. :)

I now have a strange situation with xffm in xfce4...
I can browse the SMB Network but when I try to acess the shares I get:

Code:
No such device:
no smbfs support detected in kernel

This only happens when I am not root.

I have smbfs compiled as a module...
Do I have to built it in?
