usb memory stick light does not go off with "eject /dev

The green light on any usb memory stick does not go off.
I tried many things including
Code:
umount /mnt/usb
eject /dev/sda1
eject /dev/sda

But, the light is still on.
How can I have it turned off?

IMO eject works only with removable devices like cdroms/dvd to open/close the tray. are you sure you`re using it correctly ?
