I've used the University of Wisconsin one for quite some time for it's good speed to me, however it's recently going downhill. Sometimes I don't connect to it and get errrors during the compiles for being unable to download anything.
Before that I used to use the Oregon State University mirror which is the first on the list and it was awesome, however speed also went down for me from that it seems more people use it now since it's obviously the first one. I know this may seem like a strange forum post to some but I just wanted to hear if you people have any preferable favorties or not.
Also do you people prefer ftp or http? I always thought http is a little bit faster sometimes, due to those lags on some ftp servers when you connect and log in anonymously for the authentication or something. |

You're supposed to pick a site closest to you... That's why the mirrorselect is for!

I've had problems with the mirror select tool before by having it ruin my make.conf file, besides I find it a bit better by just knowing a good mirror and sticking with it, I don't see what's wrong with taking that approach. The Wisconsin mirror worked great for me for months and it was much easier to just type in the mirror address in the make.conf rather than do that mirrorselect command especially knowing it might mess up my make.conf file again.
And besides as long as it's in USA it really doesn't matter how close one is to you, I've had one that was from a university in my city Cleveland Ohio when I was living there yet I got better speeds from the west coast. |

Close to you network-wise not geographic-wise. Your university may be across the street, but still 10 hops away depending on the Internet. Mirrorselect will run a number of tests that should pick the best mirror for you. If you're worried about it, make a backup of make.conf and then run it. You may also want to do it in the morning around 10am when you're getting all the other rsync junkies pulling the overnight changes so you are testing systems under somewhat normal load.

Sync with rsync.gentoo.org ONCE per day via cron, and you don't have to worry about how slow or fast it is. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |
