I just picked up a nice USB2/FW external drive bay (AMS Venus DS3) and am trying to get it working on my Audigy 2 ZS firewire port.
It works fine on USB.
I believe I have all the required 1394 modules built and loaded (read - most of them), but the drive does not appear as a /dev/sd? device.

I'm using kernel 2.6.10-gentoo-r1
The drive bay has a new Samsung 40GB disk in it

Any ideas?
Thanks.
This is my first FW device, so I'm a bit lost to begin with. :)

Along the same line, what is the proper command for creating a fat32 fs on a large disk?
I did mkdosfs -F 32 /dev/sdb1 (and then sdb5), but the partitions were not seen as valid fat32 partitions when I hooked the drive up to XP.
So I deleted and re-created the partitions with it so they would be formatted properly.

Thanks.

I just realized that when I connect the drive to laptop, I use the 6-pin fw connector on drive and 4-pin connector on laptop, but use the 4-pin connector on drive and 6-pin connector on desktop.
I don't know if this has anything to do with it since the booklet doesn't say if one is an uplink-only port.
I was assuming not.

I found a review mentioning using the 4-pin on the drive and the 6-pin on the computer, so that shouldn't be an issue.
