I've emerg'ed dvdrip on both my systems, and I'm interested in ripping dvd's from my laptop with a dvd drive. I've ensured the settings between the two machines are identical.

If I mount the dvd as an iso9660 filesystem, I can navigate through the files on the disc. I can also mount it as a udf filesystem, and the only difference I notice, is that all the filenames are uppercase.

On my desktop machine, everything works fine, ripping and reading. I didn't do any special setup, and DMA is on for all my IDE devices.

On the laptop, if DMA is on for /dev/hdc (the dvd drive), I get the following output from running tcprobe -i /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 -T 1:
Code:

libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.3 for DVD access
[tcprobe] DVD image/device
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.3 for DVD access
libdvdread: Invalid title IFO (VTS_01_0.IFO).
Can't open the title 1 info file.
(probe_dvd.c) failed to probe DVD title information
[tcprobe] failed to probe source

... if I turn DMA off...
Code:

libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.3 for DVD access
[tcprobe] DVD image/device

So, that's a little better... when I then go into dvdrip and try to rip the title, I get these errors:
Code:

Can't find frame 97115 in VOB navigation file '/home/odinsdream/gattaca/tmp/cattaca09910nav.log' (which has only 0 frames).

Code:

Error executing command >tcprobe -i /home/odinsdream/gattaca/vob/001 && echo DVDRIP_SUCCESS< : libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.3 for DVD access
libdvdread: Couldn't find device name.
libdvdread: Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO
file read error: No such file or directory
[tcprobe] unknown file type
[tcprobe] filetype/codec not yet supported by 'transcode' at /usr/bin/dvdrip line 103

Meanwhile, if I look at dmesg I get a ton of these:
Code:

end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 13074556
hdc: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdc: command error: error=0x54
