Next week will go online with Gentoo systems.
I have some questions here:
Do i need a firewall ? Do i need an antivirus ? (my ass will be on the line if anything happens and i just wanna play it safe since i don't have much linux experience). ANd if i'm allready here, are there any data recovery software in linux / defragmenter(do i really need one in linux)?

smack_2k2,

You certianly ned a firewall. iptables in the kernel is very good. You need a configuration tool for it e.g. Shorewall, or something like that.
What else you need depends on what the machine is being used for.

Data recovery is a last ditch thing for when your backups fail. You need a suitable backup stratagy. Books kave been written on the topic, so I will not cover it in a post

So when I was at UCSD, there was a student who brought this up in a file systems class. The professor, being a cranky older gentleman, not so calmly explained that it's not needed in Linux, or rather on an ext file system etc.

Basically the argument goes that the algorithms are designed to keep fragmentation down. Therefore, a defragmenter is not needed, because the drive isn't suppose to become fragmented in the first place.

Personally I feel that this is a crock, because I can easily demonstrate how to get an ext3 file system to 20% fragmentation
1. Get Bit Torrent.
2. Only burn CD's when the partition is 98% full.
3. Repeat processes

Anyhow, you're not going to find a defragmenter for linux, they're basically just not out there. Reiser4 MIGHT have one in the future, but I'm not positive about that.

The system are used mainly for browsing and communications, nothing fancy.
(and of course heavy download at night :))
Good to know about the defrag, if there is no prog i guess problem solved :)
But how about AV .. any need for that ?

smack_2k2,

You probably don't need AV as long as you don't do silly things like run email attachments. If you are serving mail to windows users you will need to check for windows nasties.

if you are directed connect to the web, the answer is yes, but even if you are behind a router/firewall/gareway, like some adsl modems, a firewall don't hurt, but remenber that a misconfigured firewall should be worst than no firewall at all.

Are you kidding? viruses for linux is almost inexistent, and viruses target to windows doesn't afect linux at all.
unless you want to protect shared files with machines that use some buggy OS, you don't need a antivirus.

it depends witch filesystem you use.
according to SGI xfs haven't any data recovery system, all deletted/messed files gone forever, ext2 and ext3 have some tools to recover/undelette, reiserfs have some recovery tools, but don't play very well in some condictions.
in short ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP OF YOUR IMPORTANT DATA.
the good thing is that make backups in linux is pretty simple, there is a lot of tools/srips to make efficient backups that will fit your needs.

about defragmenter:
data in linux is writed in a very efficient way using very sofisticated filesystem that maintain the fragmentation under control, exept ext2 filesystem (deprecated IMHO) all linux filesystem don't need to be defragmented.
if you are really concerned about linux fragmentation i recomend a multiple partition schema, with separated partitions for /, /boot /usr /opt /var /tmp /home, due to nature of gentoo, /usr/portage should be a good idea too.

My advice about security is use a good firewall rules or put your box behind a other firewall( as i had said some adsl modems have a buildin firewall), never run your system as root for daily use, install a good IDS and a rootkit scanner, never install or compile any package from a source that you don't really trust or known well

as a ex-windows user totally converted to linux, i confess that i'm feel like a man that are in freedom before long time in jail, i don't care anymore about trojans, viruses, buggy software, warez, disk fragmentation, machine slowdown, filesystem errors, broken registry keys, temporary files that need to be removed, cryptic files hiden in my computer that i can't understand, tottaly lack of security and all the hell that i had suffer in the past.
linux is like a castle made in a top of the hill, it'should be hard to build, but it's strong like a rock.

cheers
