Okay-- thanks for helping. I've got nvidia working but it doesn't seem to be working... if that makes sense..

The Hardware:

Box: SN95G5 Shuttle
CPU: AMD64 3500+
Memory: DDR x512MB 400mhz (corsair)
Card: Nvidia 6600GT (AGP)

The Software:

gentoo (up to date)
kernel 2.6.9-r12
6629 nVidia drivers -- emerged nvidia-glx, nvidia-kernel, emul-linux-x86-nvidia (all masked ~amd64)

The problem:

Very Low Frame Rates (560 fps in glxgears, 10-15fps in UT2004)

Things its not:

* I use the "nvidia" driver in xorg.conf, not "nv"
* "glx" is confirmed loading
* I've commented out "Load "dri"" in x.org
* I've tried setting "NvAgp" to 0,1,2 and 3
* I did "opengl-update nvidia"
* I did update-modules and set nvidia to load on boot.
* I modprobed nvidia and confirmed via lsmod that nvidia is in the kernel
* MTRR (Memory Type Range Register) support is compiled into the kernel.

Things I've tried:

* unmerging/remerging all three nvidia-related ebuilds
* Confirmed that direct rendering IS on (via glxinfo)
* I do see the "nvidia" logo when I start X.
* I see hardware rendering-ish things like cursor shadows in X, etc.
* RenderAccel is set to True in xorg.conf

Other values of interest:

/proc/driver/nvidia/version:
NVRM version: NVIDIA Linux x86_64 NVIDIA Kernel Module 1.0-6629 Wed Nov 3 11:43:48 PST 2004
GCC version: gcc version 3.4.3 (Gentoo Linux 3.4.3, ssp-3.4.3-0, pie-8.7.6.6)

/proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status:
Status: Enabled
Driver: AGPGART
AGP Rate: 8x
Fast Writes: Enabled
SBA: Enabled

/proc/driver/nvidia/cards/0:
Model: GeForce 6600 GT
IRQ: 12
Video BIOS: 05.43.02.35.07
Card Type: AGP

Final Note:

I've searched the forums & googled everywhere and can't find anyone who's having this problem. Unreal at 10fps really, really sucks. Any help would be much appreciated!

W

PS - for fun,here's the output of glxinfo

VValdo,

What colour depth are you running ?
Look in /etc/X11/xorg.conf at
Code:
Section "Screen"
    Identifier  "Screen 1"
    Device      "NVIDIA GeForce"
    Monitor     "CTX 950ST"
    DefaultDepth 16
The DefaultDepth statement is essential if you have a choice of colour depths. The glx acceleration only works with 16 or 24 bit colour.

Yeah. I tried 16 AND 24. In fact, tonight was a big night... I tried a LOT of things:

1. Used a "valid" xorg.conf that someone in #gentoo sent me that worked on his system. Didn't help :(

2. The same #gentoo user (I mean on IRC) set me up with a brand-new .config file. I upgraded to 2.6.10r2 using his .config + my network card & file system and other minor settings.

2.6.10 or 2.6.9 I'm having the same problems.

Could it be a hardware problem? A bios problem? I'm running out of ideas here.

VValdo,

Please post your xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log files.
If you have webspace, put them there and post links, if not in the thread.

Try downgrading to kernel 2.6.8.

Personally, when I went to 2.6.9 my nvidia driver broke completely. Maybe this is the source of your performance troubles.

BTW, I'm running a 6800GT, I can run UT2003 with 4X AA and 16X AF smoothly, renderaccel works and is very fast. Moving a transparent, drop-shadowed window around uses less CPU than moving the same window around with no xcompmgr running.

I went from a Radeon 8500, to a GeForce 2 MX, to a 6800GT. It's unbelievable how much better the performance is over the Radeons. (I no longer get 100% CPU usage when browsing the web, for instance.)

Very happy with 2D and 3D performance from this card. I recommend that all ATi users drop their cards in favour of nVidia if they can. Now, if they could just get the renderaccel bugs worked out, I'd be one happy mofo.

Don't you love it when the hardest problems have the easiest solutions?

In this case-- my nvidia card dint' come with one of those "Y" power connectors. And the instructions mention nothing about it. They just show the card sliding in. So it's only after I bought a second card which DID have a power connector that I realized that was what was wrong.

I powered the card.. viola. 3d.

Thanks for everyone's assistance on this!
