Well, it does have quite a bit of graphical fanciness. That spinning logo takes plenty of cpucycles to make, ya know.

so would it help to take a theme without the spinning thing? my machine must crunch... no cpu-cycles to waste on these fancy stuff...

Why do you bother about this? As soon as you log on, entrance does not need this CPU power any more and not logged in you dont need it :)

because even when i'm not logged on there are still processes running... and these are quite important... (also the machine is a kind of server and requires all resources....)

still i found already a mayor improvement... on nvidia you can let it use the graphic power so that it something i don't need for anything else...

gdm and kdm have too much dependencies (xfce4 system)
xdm is butt-ugly
qingy, I never tried but i thought that thing only runs on directfb???

Entrance barely uses cpu cycles if you switch in into gl-mode, same goes for a lot of other e17 apps (engage for example).

Cheers

barely is quite an understatement.... in gl-mode it is still using about 8 to 9 % of my one of the cpu's (1.6Ghz...)

All of this was off course with the default theme...

I changed the theme to Nebolous and things improved :) a lot ! only using 0.2 going sometimes up to 2% off cpupower... fair enought :D ... and it is still very goodlooking

Correct.

The advantage is that you will have a login manager that does not need X (and thus saves memory), loads in about 1 second and will use very little cpu power when running (even if you choose to let it run a screen saver).

The disadvantage is that you will have to get up console framebuffer on your machine, which would give you a high resolution text console, at the cost of slower screen scrolling (but that depends on your video card mostly).

And yes, right now it runs only on top of DirectFB, but I would not call that a heavy weight library ;-)

Well, basically you have to:

1) emerge freetype with the 'bindist' USE flag turned OFF
2) emerge DirectFB with 'fbcon truetype' USE flags turned ON

And you are, more or less, ready to go...
There may still be graphic issues, but these are generally solved by issuing an 'fbset' without arguments on a shell, and copying its output as the first enty in /etc/fb.modes, so that DirectFB will use the currently active framebuffer mode.

That's because entrance is part of the upcoming e17 and a such is unstable and masked, see here on how to unmask packages, while you're at it you might want to read the entire portage handbook.

i "could" but imo that would be truly stupid as I can as well just use the command startx... (and my wife would probably not agree with me if I let her work in console....)

I have skipped using Entrance as login manager since I can't type in anything when it is running. It responds well to the mouse but not to the keyboard.

Anyone else seen this?

Edit: you can also test Entrance by typing: entrance -T. This will bring it up as a normal application under X.

That has been fixed since about half december, it was a problem with the default theme (other themes worked alright)...

Pwnz3r has a very nice xdm configuration which allows for a very flattering xdm display. And in my opinion, looks better than Entrance without the hassle of dealing with the fragility of the entrance build.

Strange because I checked out the source from CVS yesterday. I have a script that builds all the components and deletes any source directory under /usr/portage/distfiles/cvs-src prior to checking out the source code and it still has the same problem.

Beats me then, the author of entrance told me the problem was solved and my entrance has been running without problems since then, so it should work, maybe there are some leftovers or something?

Btw is the default theme still the same as a couple of months ago? Then you are having a problem with your update process because the default theme got a little makeover recently...

Don't know if the above relates to this; an emerge -e system will produce the same results ebrostig mentioned. Setting xdm as default display manager and recompiling entrance and the masked dependencies resolves the matter until an upgrade of gcc which will usually invoke an emerge -e system or world even.

you might want to check out the ebuilds that are marked version -9999. They are hardmasked with -* thought, so you'll have to add them to package.keywords
category/entrance-9999 -*

You might want to update the EFL, which entrance is based on, of which there are ebuilds of also marked -9999 (which rip files right out of cvs), and need to be added to the package.keywords file.

That is exactly what I'm doing.

Code:

cd /usr/portage/distfiles/cvs-src
rm -rf e17
cd
emerge imlib2 edb eet evas ecore epeg epsilon embryo edje esmart emotion etox ewl entice entrance elicit e

and here is the output of emerge -vp:
Code:

emerge -vp imlib2 edb eet evas ecore epeg epsilon embryo edje esmart emotion etox ewl entice entrance elicit e

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!

I'll give it another shot later tonight and maybe even just change the theme used by Entrance.

@Ebrostig: If your theme still looks like [urlhttp://xcomputerman.com/pages/images/entrance_default.png]this[/url] then you are out of date, the new default theme is somewhat different...
