| i'am not completely sure but i think not. i have had kde3.0.4 running while installing 3.0.5a and no problems. |

Yes you can be in kDE 3.0.4, I just did it.
Whenever I am installing a big package (which 3.1_rc5 is) I always CTRL-ALT-F2 to a console that way if I restart X or logout the emerge will still keep running.
There is a GLSA on 3.0.4 so you might want to upgrade to 3.0.5a if you plan on keeping a 3.0.x around.
