I go long periods without rebooting, so I can't put my finger on exactly what I have done since I last rebooted, but I no longer have usb devices recognized by the kernel. I don't remember recompiling my kernel in the last couple of weeks.
When I plug or unplug my usb mouse, clie, scanner, memory key, into a usb slot, I get no messages in dmesg or in /var/log/messages/current.
With a couple of things pluged in, a "cat /proc/bus/usb/devices" returns only the hub. What determins the ability of the kernel to recognise the hardware? Is it hotplug? Or is that later in the chain?

Color me dumb-a**.
It appears that I did do some kernel compiling awhile back that I forgot about. I moved the kernel over to /boot - without mounting the boot partition. I got myself all confused.
Second to that was that I only installed as a module ehci, thinking that covered me usb needs. Turns out that all my devices were 1.1, and I didn't understand that uhci was needed for them for my intel i810 hardware.
At least I now know what the difference is between ehci and uhci.... I think...
