PostPosted: Sat Nov 11, 2006 8:24 pm    Post subject: [Solved] mixer settings for microphone? Reply with quote

Hi all

I have a really weird problem: after finally using skype now, I detected that my microphone does not work correctly (I used two different micros to be sure it is not the hardware); I have a SB Audigy Player, and I use kmix to set the mixer settings; the microphone is at highest possible level in both input and output (though I don't see why there is even a microphone in the output section).

Now, the microphone apparently does work - but not very good, one can barely hear my voice, and if I don't switch the option "Mic boost +20db" on, one cannot hear anything when I speak into the microphone....

Can anyone help or point into the correct direction?

Thanks!

maybe you have some other related volumes (like the bass and treble capture levels) set too low?

the reason for a mic output level is if you want to hear yourself (or whatever's captured by the mic) through your speakers.

Hello

No, everything is at max. Funny thing is, it can't be hardware, as I have a dual boot with WinXP on the same machine - Skype works perfectly there...

Just did some tests and recompiled the kernel with a slightly different configuration according to the HOWTO ALSA wiki entry.

The problem persists; funny thing is, that within Audacity for example, I can record through the microphone perfectly well... It seems to be only Skype... :(

I had the same problem (I think).
I use kmix and in the settings, at the input tab, there are some red buttons. The one that says ADC must be activated (record).
You can try it out with Krec. Don't record anything. When you make noise in the microphone, you will see an indicator (VU meter) showing the noise level. When that works, skype also works.

Well - I don't have "ADC" in my KMIX input tab; I have only Bass, Treble, PCM, Synth, Line2, Mic, IEC958 Optical, Aux2, Analog Mix and Audigy CD. All are enabled (red "light" is on) and at maximum level...

I emerged krec - it emerged some aRTs stuff as well... and I can't record there... but audacity still works...

Did u tried the alsamixer?? It hav a lot of controls. I hav a SB Live 5.1 and I had some problems with mic output too, but not with recording. In my case I just hav to mute the "SB Live" channel, at the playback tab. Sounds strange, but worked =S
Try to emerge alsamixer and see if there r some more controls man.

This did indeed help - thanks! Although I am sure that I have looked into alsamixer before, I now muted / set everything in playback to 0 except for the really necessary ones.
Thanks a lot!
