Is this why I don't get any output from "cat /dev/video0"? It points to /dev/video/v4l/video0 it is activated in my kernel.

It does work, i'd recommend looking at the mythtv documentation http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-22.html You also need ivtv to get proper output
