|
|
So I see on http://packages.gentoo.org that the 2.6 kernels are now accessible as gentoo-sources (not gentoo-dev-sources), though they are masked at the moment. Am I seeing that right? Do we have any idea of how gentoo is moving from 2.4 to 2.6? I mean, where is 2.4 going? Is it just simply going to be gentoo-sources-2.4.xx, thus "unifying" the 2.4 and 2.6 kernels into one portage entry? What is to become of the gentoo-dev-sources entry, as I haven't heard any talk of Linus forming a new development branch anytime soon? |

The 2.6 kernels are very popular already, they support things that the 2.4 doesn't and probably never will. I have been using the 2.6 kernels since I installed Gentoo. The compiling of the kernel is easier, a few less things to type in, my SATA drives work perfect. Also the 2.6 kernel boots a lot faster then the 2.4 ones.
Most other Linux distros are working on switching their systems over to the 2.6 kernels also, so don't be surprised if 2.4 goes away. |

Yeah, I know all that too. I use 2.6 myself, actually. I was just wondering about the name switch, and if anyone knew more about how the kernel will be organized/named in portage in the future. Just a curiosity, really. |

thank you, portage-maintainers, for bringing 2.6 into the right position.
The name gentoo-dev-sources has been screwed up, and i wondered if
kernel 2.8 would have been called gentoo-dev-dev-sources
it's good to see that gentoo devels dont just accept those little mistakes because
they are not harmful.
lets keep the system conclusive, so newbies can understand it as fast as possible |
