Hey,
I finally took my copy of the 2004.0 LiveCD out the other day. It worked okay--network just worked; I was able to repartition the hard drive and begin the installation, closely following the handbook. However, when I attempted to unpack the Portage snapshot, about halfway through I started getting errors to the effect that there was insufficient space to unpack particular files.

This is strange for two reasons. First, Portage was certainly less than 100MB as a tarball; the compression ratio, if it's less than 70:1, is by far insufficient to fill my 7.5gig partition. I at least thought that I had everything mounted correctly. Also, it seems strange that bkunzip would continue happily in its attempts to unpack an archive, file by file, if it had run out of space.

I'm thinking perhaps / was not mounted properly and the swap partition was being used instead. Being an utter luser, I don't know how to check this, and since I did everything by the book, I don't know what to do differently to compensate. Help? Please?

mmh, sounds weird.
It'd be nice to know a little bit more about your system. Could you post the output of the following commands:
Code:
mount
df

are you sure you did the
Code:
cd /mnt/gentoo

before unpacking the tarball ? (it's mentioned at the beginning of section 5d, before being pointed to the mirrorlist)
I remember running into that problem myself, I just read over the line in the manual by accident.

Ah, right, I forgot that little step. Thank you, Saribro. Now I must commit seppuku.

If that solved the problem, please edit the title of this thread and insert [SOLVED] into it.
