hi everybody,

after a powerfailure, when booting, i get the following messages:

modprobe: cant locate module /dev/ROOT
modprobe: cant locate module /dev/BOOT
fsck: no such file or directory when trying to load /dev/BOOT

i get these several times.
it is a scsi-only setup with a qlogic qla12160 controller. it holds one disk.

sda1: boot partition (ext2)
sda2: swap
sda3: all the rest. (i think reiserfs, not sure).

i use this machine as a router on my attic, and i never have to check on it, it runs 24/24. but now i had to take it from the attic...
i also use it as a filserver and it had some important (to me) data on it.

after the messages and the notification that fsck couldnt fix the problems automaticallyi have the option to into maintenance mode.
wether in maintenance mode or continue booting, i dont see any NICs with ipconfig. it also cant find lspci.

help anyone?

ps: it has been two years when i informed myself about linux and installed gentoo. my knowledge of linux should be considered 1/20.

Hi.

It seems your /etc/fstab has errors. You should replace

/dev/BOOT with your actual boot partition /dev/sda1, and your
/dev/ROOT with your actual root partition /dev/sda3, and
/dev/SWAP with your swap partition /dev/sda2

You can boot from a live cd, mount your root partition on /mnt/gentoo to get into your system and correct the errors.

wibra,

It looks like your /etc/fstab still has
/dev/BOOT, /dev/ROOT which are the placeholders for things like
/dev/sda1 and /dev/sda3 respectively

i did not have to boot with a live cd, i can still get into my system. it just doesnt do things as it should.

I did what you suggested, indeed fstab held those values.

now i get several other messages "mount point does not exist".

i also get this one
"modprobe: cant locate module /dev/rtc "

but this last one i already had before and i thought it would go away if the other ones were fixed.

it doesnt ask me to go to maintenance mode anymore.

edit: it goes too fast for me to read every error or things that could be of value. i did dmesg, but that only gave the part before the errors. (i think another runlevel) .
i can see the drivers for my 2 ethernet being loaded succesfully, still i see nothing but "lo" in an ifconfig.

have put the harddisk in my remaining pc, to retrieve the data.

its a windows machine, and ive used rfstool to try and read the data... it doesnt seem to find the partition.

some exotic tool called acronis migrateeasy finds the partition, but that program doesnt to anything useful (to me)
