I'm having some problems getting Gentoo to work on my server. When I run emerge -system it chews on for a while and then completely drops dead after installing coreutils. This is some output:

It looks like coreutils points everything to /bin, but in /bin there are many symlinks pointing to ../../bin/*, among them rm an ls. If I run emerge -system it fails right away due to the missing rm.

$PATH is
Code:
/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/opt/bin:/usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/3.3x

Any ideas?

I think the rm errors are just output of the rm command itself. It looks more like it has an issue with /var/tmp/portage. Does this path exist, is it writable by the user running emerge, etc?

Yes, the path exists and is writable. The directory "work" mensioned isn't there, but "temp" is and I can manually create "work" if I do su portage first.

After emerge has exited I can't use ls anymore (or rm for that part) since they are just symlinks pointing to, well, themselves it seems.

DOH!!!

I'm so stupid. I made /dev/hda3 to have as / excluding /boot, /var and /home. Then I mounted /dev/hda3 as /usr as well. Clever? I think not. Couse of the problem? Most definately!

Thanks anyway, I'll get back to you if I have more problems. :D
